My family was looking for good Italian for a late lunch/early dinner and my daughter found Licari's. I have been overall disappointed with the Italian food in West Michigan but we gave it a try. I have spent time in Italy, not Sicily but this was authentic Italian! We started with Mussels and the homemade chips. Both were excellent, The only improvement would be to include some garlic bread with the mussels for dipping. We ordered bread to resolve that issue. We tried a couple of different pizzas, including traditional and the stuffed pizza. Again, excellent and very authentic with fresh ingredients and great flavor. I would highly recommend to anyone in search of great Italian (Sicilian) food.

This place is a hidden little gem. I'm not kidding about the little, the place is small and boy do they pack you in there. The wait staff was very friendly and gracious, although you could sense a bit of: "hurry up and eat and get the hell out". I do not mean to imply they were rude, but there is definitely a sense of urgency amongst the staff that I attribute to their manager wanting some turnover of the customers. I can't blame them, and again, they weren't anything but pleasant. The food was fantastic. The appetizers, main dishes, salads, pizzas.....everything is outstanding and fairly priced. I wouldn't call it inexpensive, but I would call it fair considering the quality of the food. They have some unique creations, some italian standards, and the menu ranges from sandwiches to more complex (and expensive entrees). I would say it is not a formal place, and yet not super casual. Probably not suited for a romantic dinner unless you go late at night....otherwise the neighboring table will overhear all of your sweet nothings. Parking is certainly a pain. So, you may have to exercise a little patience in finding it, parking, waiting, and navigating the crowded dining room....but the food makes it worth it.

4.25 stars! Great pizza, good apps/sandwiches/salads, adept mixology. Parking can be hard to find during peak hours, but that's because this place is popular, and deservedly so. The service is decent, if a tad slow during busy times. The appetizers are good, but I miss the potato croquettes (our server explained they just weren't that popular despite being my favorite app.) The salads are fresh and I always seem to gravitate towards the cucumber and tomato. The sandwiches are similarly good as well. I like the "Gotti", which is a breaded chicken cutlet with lettuce, mozzarella and a very tasty red pepper sauce. The pizza is very good. The sauce is fresh, with tasty chunks of tomato, the crust is just the right consistency and the pepperoni is spicy and flavorful. I find myself constantly stealing a piece or two from my kids (hey, they typically can only eat half of theirs anyway.) I was impressed by the bar section, though. I actually noted Lagavulin 16 year, The Balvenie 14 year Caribbean Cask and Dalmore 15 year! Props for not just having the usual stuff. Also, some of the cocktails are particularly well-crafted, with the "Old Fashioned Infusion" and the "Five Burroughs" being excellent. Seating doesn't really seem that tight right now, but if I keep stealing a few pieces of my kid's pizzas each time I eat here, I'll need a shoehorn to squeeze between the tables...

Started with the homemade chips which came with a red pepper dip. They were covered with Parmesan cheese. Wonderful!! I ordered the chicken pesto pizza and it was cooked perfectly, I would get it again for sure. The atmosphere is upscale casual, which matches the food. The pizzas range from traditional to more unique. A must try for pizza lovers!

Bobby Flay may have helped this place get their poop in group but they have gone above and beyond their potential. I would liken this place to Great Lake Pizza in Chi Town. The pizza no can pronounce (Sfinciuni) is an absolute master piece of a pie. Take a Gino's East but add richness and much better texture and you have a pizza connoisseur's wet dream. Margarita pizza is awesome as well. I honestly can't comment on anything else because when you find something so good why deviate???

Excellent calamari. Excellent arancini. MUST get the Capricciosa pizza! porch seating is great but can be loud.

Service is great and the ambience is cozy. However this place leaves much to be desired which is disappointing as it highly regarded. The crust was so bland as well as the sauce. I applaud the fresh ingredients as you can tell that is the base of their recipes but everything was lacking flavor.

The owners are wonderful, very polite and visible in the restaurant! Great good and pleasant environment!

"Oh, I'm sorry", "My bad.. I'm just trying to squeeze in over here" , Ooopps, pardon me", "Excuse me", Excuse me". "Oh sorry, I'm in your way", "I'll just be over here", "Sorry"... "Excuse me"... That was my entire conversation with most of the restaurant at 7pm on Friday. With everyone trying to get out of the cold, the entrance was packed. I should've expected that though from this popular Italian eatery. But happily, especially for those that I kept bumping into, my group of three found a spot at the bar and had our dinner and drinks there. I ordered a house wine, my husband got some beers, and my friend ordered beer and talked me into their Sausage Broccoli soup. Promising me it was lighter then most broccoli soups, I was impressed that it was filling yet I didn't feel stuffed. It warmed me up on a cold night. The place is smaller than I expected, and the entrance was crammed on Friday night, but once seated, I enjoyed the closeness and coziness of it all. It reminded me restaurants in Chicago where everyone sits close together and you end up chatting with your those next to you. Licari's offer a well-rounded wine and drink menu and their pizzas' - their signature item- looked amazing. The staff ws friendly and the bartender was attentive, even with the rush of people.

I discovered this place when they first opened but hadn't been back in awhile. Now, it's one of my favorite places to go to catch up with a friend over happy hour or date night. I've had several of the appetizers, salads and pizzas. All of the items are made fresh and a lot of the recipes come from Italy. They do also have gluten free options and a delivery area. My favorites include the caprese salad, piccoli calzoni, any of their pizzas and the linguini. The fresh ricotta is amazing! The chips and arancini are great also! They have a great happy hour 3-6 and specials on appetizers, house wines and beer. The fresh ingredients, fantastic service and variety of their menu will keep me coming back.

Amazing balls! They even deliver within a 5 mile radius, which might not be super great for my checkbook or diet!

The taste of this pizza place is excellent. However don't order anything that has seafood in it. The 2 times we've ordered and it contained seafood we got only 2-5 shrimp for the entire meal with almost $20 per plate.

Came here after a full day of packing to move. Got here 30 mins before close, & they welcomed us as if they were going to be open for several more hours! The food was delicious...even for being the last table!!! So fresh & tasty! The chips as an appetizer are SO GOOD! The pizza here is the best in the city...even better than the pizza at the Mitten!! Great experience overall!

I have been wanting to try Licari's for a vey long time! Unfortunately it didn't really live up to the amazing reviews I have heard. I went in the other day for an early dinner. We started with the calamari which was really good! The most tender calamari I have ever had. The marinara dipping sauce was very fresh tasting. I ordered the pesce panetti, which had salmon, caramelized onions, spinach and goat cheese. My friend got the Gigi, with turkey, prosciutto, lettuce, mozzarella, tomato and vinaigrette. I was pretty disappointed with the sandwich. The salmon "filet" was really just a few sparse chunks of salmon, definitely not what I would refer to as a filet. The caramelized onions did not go well with the flavors of the rest of the sandwich. Don't get me wrong, I love caramelized onions - they just didn't work well on the sandwich. The bread was good but it overpowered the sandwich, especially since the amount of salmon was seriously lacking. My friend was also unimpressed with her sandwich. The housemade chips however were really good! At the suggestion of our server we also got the roasted red pepper dipping sauce which was amazing. It was cheesy and delicious! The service was good and we got some berry goat cheese cheesecake for dessert which was very good. I will probably go back at least once, but I would definitely get the pasta next time! Everything was fresh, just not really what I was expecting.

Licari's has been on my "gotta go to list" for a while now. It is always so packed that I kept avoiding it....it's difficult to bring a 7 month old to a crowded restaurant with close quarters. So when I got the chance to go there at the super early time of 4:30, I was stoked. The house wine was flavorful and didn't have that watered down taste you get from a lot of inexpensive wines. My husband and I opted for one of the traditional Sicilian pizzas. I am so glad we did! The crust had an incredible amount of flavor. The sausage and pepperoni were top quality, and the sauce was some of the best I've had on a pizza. The service was friendly, and I am going back to Licari's as often as possible.

Fabulous trio of antipasto. Gorgeous split tail bass, crab cakes best ever and the rice balls.....Yum. House Cabernet was delicious. Will be back to try more on a great menu

The pizza here is amazing. AMAZING. I don't express that lightly, either. The three-star rating is for the service as it was ridiculously lackluster. Pizza: Michelangelo. Bruchetta style tomatoes, an olive-oil base, bacon, and goat cheese. Seriously delicious. Thin, perfectly chewy crust. Flavorful, not greasy. Service: Bethany. Who was also "bartending" but there were only two other tables in the entire restaurant (and nobody at the bar.) She never asked how anything tasted, never came back to check on us once our food was delivered and our water was empty for a long time. I'm not a ball buster when it comes to service, either-- but when there are several servers standing around with nothing to do, and the three tables that do have customers aren't being attended to = not cool. A very young waitstaff that seemed much more interested in talking to each other than providing any genuine service. A real shame with how amazing the kitchen obviously does here. I'll be back for sure, the food really is fantastic. I'm hoping next time my impression of the service is redeemed.

Stopped in today because of the Food Network show. I ordered the giardini pizza... BEST pizza I've ever had. I also had a glass of house Chardonnay ( on special for $3 a glass) and it tasted like an expensive version... not house. Savannah was an excellent, friendly waitress. Overall excellent experience. I live 45 miles away and will gladly drive for this experience again!

We have been to Lacaris three times now and it just gets better and better! The resturant is bigger now that they opened a patio. We sat outside and enjoyed the sunshine as we had dinner and drinks. We shared the homemade potatoe chips to start with red pepper dipping sauce. GET THE CHIPS! So yummy..very addictive. We then shared a plate of pasta. I cant remeber what it was called but it had spinach and mushrooms and shrimp tossed in noodles. Very very delicious. I think the best part of our experience was the server. He was very knowledable of the food and beers on tap. He was attentive but left us alone. He was so nice to run out of the resturant when we forgot out to go box. This place is great and we will be going back for sure :)

We drove from the Flint area to meet our daughter for lunch here. We enjoyed one of the finest Pizzas that my wife and I have ever had. The crust, as well as the rest of the ingredients, were all excellent. We especially enjoyed the fresh basil, pepperoni and mushrooms toppings. Overall, a very pleasant dining experience. We would definitely return to this restaurant again when visiting the Grand Rapids area. Review Update: We returned to Licari's over a year later and the food and service were even better than the first time we visited. Our pizza was so good that we had to order another one. We especially enjoyed talking with our server "Royce". He provided us with friendly and efficient service. Overall, this was another excellent dining experience for us at this restaurant establishment.

The Margharita pizza is the best in town! Homemade sauce, fresh mozzarella and basil on a perfectly baked crust. We eat here about once a month and I always get the same thing. Love the house chips also.

  • Justin P.

Pizza was pretty good. It was a little on the greasy side. Paid 33 bucks for a large pepperoni and small deluxe so not to bad but a little high. We got take out and my biggest complaint was they told me 40 minutes until it would be ready. I showed up 35 minutes later and the pies had clearly been dieing in window for at least 10 minutes so by the time I made the 4 mile trip home it was less than the freshness you expect when spending 33 bucks on pizza....that said I would go again but eat in not carry out or delivery. Still searching for a 5 star pizza in GR. Definitely worth giving them a shot but don't expect Bobby Flay quality...standards have clearly dropped.

Great spot for a casual first date. Free chips with yelp check in! Although pizza wasn't memorable. Quite bland.

    (2)
  • Ursula T.

Amazing chips! The only issue was the confusion with checking in and the free chips with a pizza. I have never dined in and gotten the chips several times yet the bartender was quite adamant that their policy was dine in only. Hmmmm guess I am crazy. Lol otherwise amazing food!

  • Jacob T.

This place sucks. Pizza was crap chip and some special sauce was crap. Chips were soggy and sauce was all grease and orange. They made our pizza with the wrong cheese and still served it to us instead of making a new pizza. Never coming to this place again. I had high hopes.

  • Tim P.

Unfortunately, this one check in will be my only one. I have no more reason to go to Grand Rapids, my daughter graduated. We stopped in here on graduation eve for lunch with some friends. We had their house made chips, which were good. the pizzas were fresh, hot and tasty. We would definately go again given the chance Note - thin crust, we thought we had ordered too much, but the thin crust made them very easy to eat more than you would think possible.

Solid place, and great service. Very cozy, and get used to the wait. I have to say, the pizza was very good..but the margherita is not my favorite because its too many chunks of tomato for me (sicilian style) versus my favorite which is more napolitan style, less chunky sauce, thinner crust. still very good... salads were a bit overpriced for the serving size, but this is a very good place. service was excellent-4stars for service food was very good.

Great service, knowledgeable staff, great food. Fun, Italian feel. Wonderful pizzas. Good signature cocktails. Limited seating, but so worth the wait.

Food is very good, fresh and well prepared. The place is spotless, watched the staff wipe every menu before it was given out again. VERY VERY LOUD. IF YOU ARE GOING ON A DATE AND WANT TO HAVE A CONVERSATION IT IS DIFFICULT.

Five star from start to finish! The pizza, the beer selection and the service. It's a bit out of our way but we will happily go back again!.

Went there for a bridal shower with 22 guests. The atmosphere was wonderful, the staff was friendly, attentive, and top notch. However, it was the food that stole the show. It was one of the best Italian meals I've ever had! We even bought some Marinara sauce to take home because it was that addicting; fresh, bright, and paired perfectly with their garlic bread. All of us said we can't wait to go back again.

My wife and I have been dining here for some time and the service has gotten worse and food portions have gotten smaller. We just ate here tonight and I ordered the Pasta con Broccoli and it was very bland. It looked like pasta with broccoli in water. The waitress didn't offer anything else and took it very personal when I didn't like it. I would not recommend this restaurant.

  • Matt T.

No pictures (sorry, first time I had an appetite in over a week), but the wife and I had a great dinner @ Licari's this evening after getting the cast on my ankle. Thank you for having fresh calimary! Those were some of the best we've had, the breading was very light and flavorful and the sauce was unique. We shared a Pasta a la Chef (my favorite) and the Pasta Gambaretti. Phenomenal as always. The shrimp in the Gambaretti were cooked perfectly, with just enough cream sauce to coat everything but not drown the dish. My wife had tiramisu (loved it) and I had the raspberry gelato (meh). There was 1/2 of a frozen raspberry in the entire serving dish (large coffee cup). A pretty bland dessert. I forget who the venture of the gelato was, however. Can't wait for our next visit.

I've only been here a couple times but that was enough convincing that this place kills it when it comes to making a pizza. That being said... I recently made my first phone order for a pie to go and was blown away by the chic that answered the phone. First off, the background noise was so loud I could barely hear myself speak let alone hear what she was saying. Nearly 3 mins later my simple order for a margherita pizza finally gets placed and this is when it gets super classy on her part. I tell her I have a free chips with purchase of a pizza via the yelp check ins and she responds...and I quote "I don't think so!" Shocked by her response and thinking she may have heard me wrong I repeat the free chip offer and again the same response!! Alrighty then...Click. I hang up. Manager calls me back and tries to redeem her employees incompetence but fails as she says the free chips offer is for dine in only. Lol. Apparently, redeeming a free chip offer which mind you did not specify dine in or carryout is a battle this place finds worthy of losing a customer for. I can see bobby flay who took part in the creation of this establishment shaking his head in disappointment.

  • Eric G.

The food and atmosphere were good but the waitress messed up out order. Although she admitted it, she didn't apologize for it and appeared to be more attentive to other tables. It's not a big deal and I would definitely go back but I noticed that other reviews had praised service.

We had been searching for a great Chicken Pesto Pizza. Finally! We have found it! Thank you so much Licari's!! We will be back!

I can't tell you how much my husband and I love this place!! It feels like a little hidden gem and is always cozy for the two of us. The calamari is probably the best in GR. Amazing crust of the pizza and fabulous rice balls!! Great beers on tap also. Don't let the fact that it's hidden off the road stop you from going!

Pizza is awesome. The back room seating area smells so bad we asked to be moved to the bar area. We mentioned it to another couple and they said the same thing and heard it from others as well. Seems to be an underground swell of negativity about the foul smell in the back room patio area.

I heard that a new pizza place opened up across the street and decided to check it out for lunch today. The staff was very friendly and I got to meet the owner Gianni, who was also very nice and helpful. I admit that I tend to be a bit of a pizza snob. I tend to grade a bit harder on the higher end pizza restaurants as opposed to the fast-food pizza joints like Pizza Hut. I ordered the Pizza Margarita, my litmus test of a pizza place. If you have it on the menu and can't make the most basic and classic of pizza well, then I don't trust you to make anything else. They did a very good job. The crust was chewy and soft, but not fluffy either. It had a very good mouth feel to it. The sauce had chunks of tomato in it and was flavorful. At the time they also had a promotion where if you checked in on Yelp you got an order of Licari's chips on the house. They are think cut chips with Parmesan, salt and pepper. Gianni said they were addicting and they are. I was very happy overall. So why 4 and not 5 stars...I was debating this the whole review. I was eating by myself for lunch and the smallest size they had was a 12" pizza. Which is more than enough for 1 person. It would be nice if they had a smaller lunch size like an 8" or so. It was a tad on the pricey side, but the ingreadients were fresh and good, so I don't mind paying for quality. If you are in the area and it's here or Gus's pizza, go here for sure.

We were there on a Friday evening just before the crowd arrived. We did not have any of the pizza; perhaps we should have. We had panettis (sandwiches). They were okay. Nothing to write home about. They came with some homemade chips. This is a matter of personal taste but we thought that they were underseasoned. The noise level is really high because of so many hard surfaces. To add to this, we sat underneath the speaker so the music was blaring at us. The service was fine. If we do come back I guess we will try the pizza since that is the more popular item.

The appetizers are great especially the fried rice balls filled with cheese. Love all the pizza choices.

It gets a little crowded Fri/Sat nights, but this little pizza place is adorable. Great DATE SPOT, especially considering the Crushed Grape is right next door. The pizza is delicious, as are the homeade chips. Service has always been phenomenal, just like the food.

I've been to Licari's several times and everything I've tried is excellent! There homemade chips are awesome with or without the red pepper dip. Can't wait to go again!

Went there just for the pizza, and we weren't disappointed. We had a Margherita and a Bocce (salami, sausage, pepper and onion) and added roast garlic to it. The Bocce was the favorite although that is in no way saying that the Margherita was bad, but the Bocce was just so good. The crust is on the thin side but still chewy. We sat 4 at a rather small, square table, but Licari's had a neat 2 tiered pizza stand so the table did not feel too cramped. The interior is contemporary and classy. It was loud inside due to lots of hard surfaces. There was a nice outdoor patio, but it was just too hot that night to sit outside. Excellent service and reasonable prices make this restaurant a very good choice. I don't agree with other reviewers that it is expensive. Maybe they should stick to Dominoes or Pizza Hut. We will certainly be back maybe to try some of their other, non-pizza choices.

I visited with friends on a weekday evening and Licari's was hopping. The waitress was very friendly, though seemed to have a few too many tables. We started with the arancini's. They were huge, but not as yummy as those at Amore. I ordered the Classic Vegetarian sandwich (Pannetti). It was good, but not great. I expected it to be warm/toasted, but it was cold. It came with some cheesy potato chips, which were pretty good, but again, not great. My two friends ordered pizza. They both really liked it (one got a Vegetarian and one got the Margherita). I tried the Vegetarian. It was good.

First time at Licari's loved the Margarita pizza and drink specials. The pizza is crispy with fresh delicious ingredients. The atmosphere is trendy and elegant. I loved the decor. The waiter was prompt and friendly.

Really like this place. Great pasta, pizza and sandwiches....fresh ingredients....authentic flavors. Would like to see them extend their pasta offerings as what they have is excellent but greater variety would be nice to keep me coming back more often. They are new so give them time.

We had our sons dinner rehearsal here last summer. The atmosphere was wonderful out on their patio. The food was excellent with many choices. We chose many different kinds of pizza and they were all very good. Their specialty chips were also very good and addicting. All of the food is clearly made with fresh ingredients, a real plus. It seems a bit pricey but with all the fresh ingredients and delicious taste it is well worth it. The drawback that keeps us from returning is no reservations and waiting line is too long to bring a group of friends. Wish they had more seating...

  • Beau M.

I have been there a couple of times. There pasta dishes are excellent. The chips are addicting and there sandwiches are excellent as well. The staff are friendly and the service is great! I would reccomend them without reservation. Others have commented on there prices. You are paying for fresh ingredients prepared well. The prices are not higher then other restaurants like them.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.
